IMEC to establish chip innovation centre at Málaga TechPark
An agreement has been signed to establish an IMEC chips innovation centre at IASP full member Málaga TechPark, marking the first IMEC facility outside Belgium. The collaboration involves the Spanish government, the Junta de Andalucía, and the Málaga City Council, aiming to bolster Spain's microelectronics ecosystem.
IMEC, headquartered in Belgium, is a global leader in semiconductor research and development. The new centre will focus on researching new materials beyond silicon, developing new processes, and innovating equipment for various applications. It will also collaborate with universities to enhance research and technological transformation.
The Spanish Ministry for Digital Transformation will finance the construction and provide two-thirds of the equipment for the centre's clean room. The Junta de Andalucía will contribute the land and one-third of the necessary funds, while the Málaga City Council will expedite administrative processes.
Juanma Moreno, President of the Junta de Andalucía, said, "We are creating a powerful 'technological south,' where all the major corporations want to be because they know that the future lies here, in Andalusia, thanks to the power and solvency of the Andalusian technological ecosystem”.
This project supports Spain's Perte Chip initiative, aiming to strengthen the national semiconductor value chain and achieve technological sovereignty in Europe.
