Background information

Caohejing Hi-Tech Park, in the southwest of Shanghai, is a state-level economic and technological development zone, a high-tech industrial zone, as well as a national export processing zone.

Covering an area of 14.28 square kilometres, the park is home to 3,600 national and international companies, including 500 with foreign investment and 126 high-tech enterprises set up by Fortune Global 500 multinationals.

Over the past 30 years, the park has developed an innovation ecosystem based around five key sectors: new materials, aerospace engineering, biological medicine, automobile R&D and clean energy. With more than 20 universities and colleges located nearby, as well as 120 research institutes, Caohejing has access to a rich talent pool in Shanghai.

Facilities at Caohejing Hi-Tech Park include an R&D center, a network operation center, a financial data center and technical innovation center. It is also home to the Shanghai Connectory, an IoT-focused incubation space in the heart of the city run jointly with Bosch that helps startups test ideas and access IoT industry resources from Bosch, as well as connect and co-create with Bosch innovation teams. It also runs the ‘Thinkubation’ open innovation acceleration programme in partnership with Cisco, helping bridge the gap between a big tech corporation and innovative SMEs.

In 2003, the State Council approved of setting up Shanghai Caohejing Export Processing Zone; and in 2004 green-lit the park’s expansion to establish Pujiang Hi-Tech Park, a state-level economic and technological development zone.
