Last month, the 2nd annual European Ocean Days – a week-long event dedicated to advancing ocean sustainability – took place in Brussels, Belgium, bringing together policymakers, researchers, industry representatives, and conservationists to exchange knowledge and develop sustainable objectives under the EU Mission Ocean framework. This year’s event addressed critical topics including the future of Europe’s seas, blue innovation, investment opportunities, and ocean literacy.
Our member, Sociedade Portuguesa de Inovação (SPI) participated in various sessions to engage with a diverse range of projects aiming to shape European ocean policies and collaboration under the BlueMissionAA and AtlantECO projects. At the Young Voices for the Ocean session, SPI highlighted initiatives that emphasise the importance of youth participation in the European Ocean Pact, advocacy for marine conservation and restoration, and promoting future careers in the blue economy. The session underscored the critical role that young people play in building a more resilient and sustainable ocean future. SPI representatives also contributed to discussions at the Mission Restore Our Ocean and Waters Forum and the Fisheries and Ocean Dialogues, where stakeholders addressed topics such as marine ecosystem restoration, pollution mitigation, and the transition to a climate-neutral blue economy.
SPI’s involvement throughout the event reaffirmed its commitment to international collaboration and inclusive innovation. By supporting the Mission Ocean objectives, they’ll work to ensure that science, policy, and entrepreneurship come together to protect and restore our ocean by 2030. As our oceans are the beating heart of our planet and our economy, we applaud and will continue to highlight the active involvement of our members in seeking sustainable development and future solutions that will protect our oceans for years to come.
