New regional hospital to be built at Waterloo's R+T Park
The David Johnston Research + Technology Park (R+T Park) at the University of Waterloo in Canada has been selected as the site for a new regional hospital, marking a significant development for healthcare in the Waterloo-Wellington area. The new facility will merge Grand River Hospital and St. Mary’s General Hospital, aiming to enhance healthcare services and foster innovation.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Minister of Health Sylvia Jones announced the project, emphasising its role in expanding hospital capacity across the province. “The new hospital site in Waterloo will support the region’s fast-growing community,” said Jones.
Vivek Goel, president of the University of Waterloo, highlighted the collaboration's benefits, stating, “Today’s announcement means more than a new state-of-the-art hospital in our region, it’s a deepening of an already strong collaboration between our university and health institutions across the region.”
The new hospital will occupy approximately 60 acres in IASP full member R+T Park, strengthening the connection between the university and community healthcare providers. The development is expected to provide cutting-edge research and experiential learning opportunities, contributing to the region’s health and technological advancement.
