The 4th Industrial Revolution : Impacts on Shanghai Science and Technology Parks (STPs) and Areas of Innovation (AOIs)

The 4 th Industrial Revolution is understood as the prevailing application of digital technologies, which has influenced different areas of our modern society. The purpose of this paper, is analyzing transitions, reforms and changes in science parks during the new round revolution. By exploring over 90 STPs/AOIs in Shanghai, China, a “BOS” framework is established that explains impacts of the revolution on science parks from three aspects: business model, operation and service. Moreover, the paper looks into specific situations of Shanghai STPs/AOIs by statistical analysis and a case study of Shanghai Shibei Hi-tech Park. The result shows that impacts of the new revolution on business model, operation and service lead to an open innovation ecosystem, where the flow of knowledge, information and capital among different entities is profoundly enhanced.
