The Amazon Oil Laboratory (LOA), located at Guamá Science and Technology Park (PCT Guamá) in Brazil, is making significant strides in transforming industrial waste into valuable bioproducts and biofuels. Due to its privileged location in the Amazonian region, PCT Guamá plays a central role in driving innovation that links to local resources and the rich biodiversity. LOA’s research on harnessing the Amazon's natural resources in a sustainable way is a perfect example of contributing to both local economic development and environmental preservation.
Through advanced research in biochemistry and vegetable oil technology, LOA aims to reduce waste while creating new products. The developments from this laboratory span various sectors, including cosmetics, food, and renewable energy, with a strong focus on maximizing the use of raw materials.
“By developing technologies that reduce reliance on fossil fuels, we are not only supporting the local economy but also contributing to global sustainability”, says Luís Adriano Nascimento, Vice-Coordinator of LOA.
The laboratory’s innovative approach takes full advantage of the region’s vast biodiversity using it as an opportunity. Previously underused waste is reused in the production of cosmetics, functional foods and biofuels reducing the dependence on fossil fuels.
LOA’s work aligns with the growing global demand for sustainable energy solutions. The laboratory is also advancing efforts to produce biofuels like bio-kerosene for aviation, contributing to the reduction of emissions in the air transport sector. Their research supports Brazil’s goals for energy diversification and is in line with the targets set by the Paris Agreement on climate change to reduce carbon emissions.
PCT Guamá plays a vital role in supporting LOA’s research and other sustainable initiatives. The CEO of the Guamá Foundation, João Weyl, who is responsible for the management of the Park, says, “The work being done by LOA reinforces the PCT’s commitment to fostering innovation and sustainability in the Amazon. We are proud to provide an environment that accelerates the achievement of our members' goals”.
This exemplifies how science parks can drive both environmental and economic progress, creating sustainable solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
We look forward to seeing the continued impact of this collaboration and the future innovations it will bring.
