Description:
The sustainable public transport is the objective of many cities and regions in Europe. The policy makers relies now more on the ideas of the experts and public administration who are working out solutions and strategies with other stakeholders and citizens. Although the solutions used in Europe are improving significantly, the crucial and often missing element are the needs and motivations of citizens whose decisions and practices are crucial for the sustainable mobility. More and more projects promote the concept and the tools for public engagement (citizen panels, participatory diagnosis, surveys and more to be developed) among the policy makers in order to influence the people behaviours and decision towards the sustainable mobility and reduction of carbon footprint. The paper addresses the issue of transport policies improvement by including citizens to the process of design of sustainable transport strategies with the view to change their habits incorporating findings of behavioural sciences. The paper is the result of almost four years long project in which technology parks, municipalities and universities from Poland, Germany, Greece, Spain and United Kingdom investigate the issue of potential for improvement of public transport policies and design the action plans for their regions.
