The convergence between interests of the quadruple helix (university, government, companies and society) guided public policies in the early 2000s in Brazil to promote areas of innovation. The association of investment in infrastructure and business models' design characterized the development of parks and incubators in Brazil. At the same time while innovation policies were developed, Brazil invested in promoting an agenda focused on energy efficiency, based on the environmental impact projected by the energy matrix adopted in Brazil.
This article aims to present a synthesis of Brazilian government energy efficiency initiatives and its efforts to support the implementation of innovation areas, the correlations between the two agendas and an analysis of the role that innovation areas can play, both in their infrastructures and in the agenda of fostering the generation of innovative businesses, as initiatives of environment sustainability are intentionally articulated
