The development of green technologies is both a necessity and an opportunity of our time. The demand for green technology is expected to increase by about 7% percent annually to 5,902 billion euro by 2025 (1).
A study published by the European Patent Office and the International Energy Agency highlighted that technologies needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are not sufficiently market-ready “whilst the time window available for bringing them to the market is closing rapidly.” Moreover, “reliable intelligence on trends in low-carbon energy (LCE) innovation is crucial for supporting sound business and policy decisions.” (2).
This paper focuses on the importance of gathering data on trends from patent and trademark databases to enable the efficient deployment of resources for green technology development.
